What causes Bad Breath?
|
Bad breath, or Halitotis has a variety of causes. Bacterial action in the mouth, stomache contents, dehydration, illness and many other factors all contribute to bad breath.
During the fresh breath program we like to identify and eliminate the causes of bad breath. The causes are unique to each individual. Our treatments are complemented by our range of quality products to help you maintain fresh breath every day. |
Nina Tetra, treatment coordinator at Yaletown explains all.......The truth about bad breath:
Q. What causes bad breath?
The main cause is gum disease. The bacteria that cause gum disease produce sulphur compounds which cause a bad odour from our breath. regular hygiene/fresh breath appointments with the dentist, good oral hygiene at home with the right products will solve most bad breath problems.
Other factors include diet. What we eat can influence our breath. Dairy products before bed for example. Keeping hydrated with plenty of water is important in keeping fresh breath. Dehydration is a big factor. Some medication and illnesses can contribute to this. Dehydration can cause dry mouth, which is an environment which helps bacteria grow.
Q. How often should I get my teeth cleaned professionally?
For most people its every 4 months. But for for some it should be more frequent. It depends on the individual. For example, smokers, diabetics, people with teeth and gums predisposed to problems should consider more frequent hygiene.
Q. What are the best products for keeping gums and teeth clean at home?
We recommend Breath RX or Retardex which is particularly good for controlling gum disease. These products are great for fresh breath and keeping control of bacteria. Floss is so important and is really under used. If you're looking for advice, we're always here to help.
